Beyond Earth: A Poster Series
I’m painfully bored of seeing ‘minimalist’ series posters where designers re-imagine computer game boxes as Penguin book covers, toothpaste brands as cigarette boxes or something as equally trite. It’s not they’re necessarily bad (although some of them get far more attention than they deserve) but they tend not to serve any purpose at all other than jumping on the bandwagon. These here are, however, a really beautiful set of prints by Stephen Di Donato that illustrate and explain facts about the planets in our solar system. Although they subscribe to the overused minimalist aesthetic, the artist has infused their own style into the illustrations and coupled them with actual useful and interesting information about the respective planets. I could easily see a set of these hanging in a physics classroom somewhere, looking good and serving a noble purpose.
Gosh, these are gorgeous. I disagree with the comment above, though — this is clearly not just another series of the “minimalist” fad, because it actually has style and substance. Everything with a solid color background ≠ minimalist.
